Cropping up in the group of 'best song' votes was U2, for One and Beautiful Day. Someone gave big props to Advance Australia Fair, alongside votes for The Darkness' Girlfriend, AC/DC's Long Way To The Top, Mouth by Merril Bainbridge, Flaunt It by TV Rock and Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

The title of 'worst song' saw three strong contenders in Crazy Frog's Axel F, Shaddup You Face by Joe Dolce and Wasabi by Lee Harding. Others couldn't stand Billy Ray Cyrus crooning Achy Breaky Heart, or anything by Ben Lee, Butterfingers, Rogue Traders, Simple Plan or 'anything in vocal group falsetto'.

THE DARKNESS 4/04/2006 @ Metro City

With far less grandeur (or grandstanding perhaps) than anyone was expecting, The Darkness took the stage quite simply, under a wash of green light and strange Scottish loops, and began with little fuss. A far cry from their flamboyant Big Day Out performance a couple of years back, this was The Darkness in club mode. Wearing a very simple blouse-and-jeans ensemble (well, as simple as a blouse-and-jeans ensemble can be on a grown man) singer Justin Hawkins looked far less camp than he has in the past, with not a one-piece jumpsuit in sight.

The Darkness In Perth, Australia

So absence make the heart grow fonder, you might say this was the case last night when The Darkness returned to our shores last night playing the first date of their sold out Australian tour. Certainly the queue to get in said yes as it snaked around the whole block.

Return of the hot lick

But now the guitar is back, big time - to the point where a new generation of guitar pop-rockers have shouldered aside R&B, dance music and rap. As turn-tables, synths and sequencers make room for guitars, amps and drums, new champs of power-chord and twiddlefest emerge. When Jack White of the White Stripes debuted his "other" band the Raconteurs last week, he proved as prone to the 10-minute solo as Lowestoft Spandex monster Justin Hawkins of the Darkness.

Neither are Jack and Justin the only guitar heroes who are decades away from applying for a bus pass.

What's so great about eunuchs?

We can shuffle on our iPods great countertenors such as Andreas Scholl and David Daniels with the Bee Gees and Michael Jackson. Jeff Buckley's singing of Britten's Corpus Christi Carol is as exquisite and unearthly as the male soprano Randall Wong's renditions of stratospheric castrato arias are astonishing. And in the Darkness's Justin Hawkins wild, ecstatic descants, we hear something almost as outrageous as anything Farinelli might have produced. And involving a lot less suffering.
