Rock gods

If you thought Dan Hawkins couldn't recover from a sibling in rehab & a demise of The Darkness, then think again. His new band Stone Gods played a 'homecoming' gig at Norwich Waterfront and showed they can rise from the flames (more on flames later).

Ye gods! Dan and Ed are back

They were our area's most successful rock band ever, but when Justin Hawkins quit The Darkness in October 2006 it seemed their rock 'n' roll odyssey was over. Fast forward 16 months and Dan Hawkins and Ed Graham are back on the road. RICHARD WOOD caught up with the former Kirkley High School pupils during their hectic schedule to see exactly what we can expect from their new band, The Stone Gods.

AS members of The Darkness Dan Hawkins, Ed Graham and Richie Edwards experienced fame and fortune They released platinum-selling albums, toured the world and won a host of awards.

At the peak of their success, you could barely turn on a television programme without seeing The Darkness playing their tongue-in-cheek cock-rock in some glitter-encrusted get-up.

Their debut album, Permission To Land, went to number one in the UK charts, and they packed out major venues including Alexandra Palace, the Birmingham NEC and the Brighton Centre.

Stone Gods' Waterfront gig

THEY had platinum selling albums, BRIT Awards, Kerrang! Awards and a world tour under their belt, but when lead singer Justin Hawkins quit The Darkness, the remaining members were staring premature retirement in the face.

Unperturbed by the whole event, ex-Kirkley High School students Dan Hawkins and Ed Graham, together with Richie Edwards are back just one and a half years later - and this time they have vowed to learn from past mistakes.

In fact the road to recovery actually started less than an hour after the trio lost their flamboyant front man as Dan Hawkins decided to continue their musical odyssey.

Darkness bassist Richie Edwards stepped forward to fill the vocal void left by Justin and, with the addition of Toby MacFarlaine on bass, the Stone Gods were formed.

Together they are an entirely tougher, edgier and heavier outfit than their former band, mixing heavy metal anthems, radio-rock and ballads.

To celebrate their new incarnation the band are currently in the middle of a UK tour and they are due to round it off at The Waterfront in Norwich this Wednesday.

They are also releasing an EP entitled Burn the Witch next month, with an album set to follow in the summer.

The Darkness

Everything you’ve heard is true. All of it. The exhaustion and the fear, the pressure, paranoia and pan pipes, the breakdowns and break-ups, the sackings, sitar solos and endless studio sessions, and now ultimately - with this, their second album - the rebirth and redemption of The Darkness.

ONE WAY TICKET TO HELL…AND BACK is the conclusion of a year-long journey from Lowestoft to London and from Monmouth to LA to prove to everyone (and themselves) just how utterly irrelevant every other band is right now. To create the album they simply had no choice but to make. To prove The Darkness are still the world’s greatest band.
