Rockers THE DARKNESS were so determined to sound authentic on their new album ONE WAY TICKET TO HELL... AND BACK they hired a panpipe player from Peru for recording sessions.

Frontman JUSTIN HAWKINS admits he tried to copy the sound of the South American instrument on synthesizer but it sounded awful.

He tells Blender magazine, "I initially tried doing it myself on a synthesizer, but it sounded really cheesy, so we got this guy who's supposedly the best (player) in the world. He lives up a mountain somewhere in Peru."

Blame the marching powder

How is it that success becomes such a poisoned chalice for so many hard rock bands? It's not as though they haven't watched Spinal Tap 666 times on the tour bus and used the fraying paperback of Hammer of the Gods as lavatory paper in badly appointed recording studios.

They say Mariah Carey sings notes only a dog can hear. Well on this showing Justin Hawkins could be having a few conversations with whales in the near future. The falsetto shrieks are as piercing as ever, and crucially, the songs are just as good too.

The album title could almost be autobiographical, as it seemed not long ago that The Darkness were heading for their own private hell, with no return ticket stub. Initial material for the second album was far from promising when given an outing live, the in-band ructions with then bassist Frankie Poullain refused to go away, and then there was Justin's more than recreational use of cocaine.

Want to get attention and make millions? Seek a void in the market and fill it.

The Darkness understands this classic business principle better than just about any other current act. The smash British group built a starry career by reviving the most commercially overlooked - if critically despised - style of rock's last 25 years: hair metal.
