The Darkness, Liverpool Summer Pops

+ posted by FlamingWhopper

THE public may be forgiven for thinking they've been left in the dark about what this flamboyant rock band had been up to recently.

After bursting on to the scene in 2002/3 with the energetic brand of rock - and singer Justin Hawkins' unforgettable skin-tight costumes - it seems like they have laid low in recent times.

But the band has probably never been busier having recently returned from touring the world.

And the fact that last night's Pops performance will be their last UK show for a while may be testament to how busy they really are.

Nobody expected last night's performance to be quiet and reserved - I spotted at least one middle aged mum wearing earplugs - and they weren't disappointed.

The evening started with an impressive 30 minute warm-up set by newcomers Roadstar, who did a good job of setting up the theme for the evening - loud and larger-than-life.

Frontman Hawkins, never one to shy away from an impressive stage costume, bounced on the stage for their one-and-a-half hour set kitted out in a lurid pink shirt and bejewelled black jeans and jacket.

"It's our last UK gig for ages, so let's milk it", Hawkins told the largely mixed, near capacity crowd.

And milk it they did.

The four-piece band launched into life with the title track from their latest album One Way Ticket To Hell and Back which got the Big Top rocking before they picked their way through a stream of their better and less known tracks.

Hawkins' distinctive falsetto voice hit the high notes of songs such as Growing on Me, although even he at times had to fight to be heard above the deafening guitar solos of his stage partners.

The band changed guitars as often as they changed songs and

Hawkins impressed the audience with his skills on the keyboard.

They finished the set - almost predictably - with the song that got them recognised and which everyone has come to know and love - I Believe (In A Thing Called Love).

And the crowd rocked.
