Stone Gods King Tuts, Glasgow, March 22 *****

STONE Gods lived up to their name by hitting the stage like lightning with Don't Drink The Water and sent the packed crowd into a frenzy.

The ex-Darkness members - guitar supremo Dan Hawkins and former bassist now singer/guitarist Richie Edwards - displayed an unbridled self-confidence that helped fuel the enthusiasm of the audience.

Edwards made a point of continually connecting with the fans, showering them with compliments, including: "It doesn't get any better than this."

The atypical rustic-styled vocals and summery acoustic ballad approach of Lazy Bones had a Quireboys appeal to it.

The more metal slanted Knight Of The Living Dead, in which the frontman brought out his V-shaped electric guitar, and the crowd-rousing Burn The Witch were spectacular.

A batch of pub-rock numbers, and in particular the encore of the "barrier pushing" Something Kinda Oooh by Girls Aloud, may have raised a chuckle or two, but dived into cringeworthy territory.

Review - Stone Gods & Black Spiders

@ Newcastle o2 Academy, March 21 2009

If you are a young, upcoming British rock band then be warned. The bar has suddenly been raised. Lifted high above the standard previously set for live shows in this country and close to the ceiling of top quality, well crafted and cunningly catchy music.

They call themselves Gods and on this evidence four frenzied dudes with razor sharps hooks really do hail from rock heaven.
